Saints and Feasts: Photius the Great, Patriarch of Constantinople, Bucolus, Bishop of Smyrna, Barsanuphius the Great and John of Gaza, Afterfeast of the Presentation of Our Lord and Savior in the Temple, St. Ilyan of Homs

Epistle Reading: St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 10:23-28

BRETHREN, "all things are lawful," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful," but not all things build up. Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor. Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience. If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience. (But if some one says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then out of consideration for the man who informed you, and for conscience' sake - I mean his conscience, not yours - do not eat it.) For "the earth is the Lord's, and everything in it."

Gospel Reading: Matthew 24:34-37, 42-44

The Lord said, "Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away till all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. As were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of man. Watch therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the householder had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have watched and would not have let this house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an hour you do not expect."
