Brunch and Alcatraz Tour – San Francisco Bay Area
Feb 7 @ 17:30 – 22:00

Join us for an alumni event at Alcatraz

Saturday, Feb. 7
Brunch: 10:30 a.m.
Tour of Alcatraz: 12:30 p.m.

Butterfly Restaurant
Pier 33 at Bay St.
The Embarcadero
San Francisco

The Alumni Association’s San Francisco Bay Area Chapter invites you to a unique opportunity to view the art exhibition of Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz and a brunch conversation with Harpur College Dean Anne McCall and Cheryl Haines ’77, who was instrumental in bringing Mr. Ai’s exhibition to Alcatraz. Ms. Haines is the owner of Haines Gallery in San Francisco and founder of For-Site Foundation, a nonprofit foundation to help realize site-specific public-art projects in the Bay Area.

Ai Weiwei is a contemporary Chinese artist internationally renowned for work that defies the distinction between art and activism. In this exhibition of new works created specifically for Alcatraz, Ai responds to the island’s layered legacy as a 19th-century military fortress, a notorious federal penitentiary, a site of Native American heritage and protest, and now one of America’s most visited national parks. Revealing new perspectives on Alcatraz, the exhibition raises questions about freedom of expression and human rights.

Ai’s sculpture, sound, and mixed-media installations occupy four locations in the former prison, three of which are usually restricted to the public. The artworks directly and imaginatively address the situation of people around the world who have been deprived of their freedom for speaking out about their beliefs – people like Ai himself. Learn more.

Join us for good food, stimulating conversation and an exciting trip to Alcatraz. Attendees will gather for brunch at 10:30 a.m., and depart for Alcatraz Island as a group at 12:30 p.m. Attendees can take the return ferry back to San Francisco as they wish throughout the afternoon. The last ferry departs Alcatraz at 4:25 p.m.

Tickets for the brunch and tour to Alcatraz are $50/person for alumni and guests. You may also just attend the brunch for $25/person. Please register online for this event by Friday, Jan. 30.

Cancellation policy: Full refunds will be granted to those who call the Binghamton University Alumni Office at 607-777-2424 on or before Jan. 30.

This event is sponsored by the Binghamton University Alumni Association, San Francisco Bay Area Chapter and the Asian and Asian American Alumni Council.

The Rewrite alumni viewing – Metro NY
Feb 14 @ 02:00 – 04:00

Join us in Manhattan for an alumni viewing of “The Rewrite”, a new movie directed by Marc Lawrence ’81

Friday, Feb. 13, at 7:15 p.m.
AMC Loews Village 7
66 Third Ave. (at 11th Street), Manhattan

A special alumni screening of The Rewrite, a motion picture set at Binghamton University, written and directed by Marc Lawrence ’81, will be held on Friday as the movie releases in several markets across the country. After yesterday’s sold-out on-campus screening – attended by 1,200 alumni, students, faculty, staff and community members – the excitement and pride of seeing Binghamton University on the big screen continues to grow.

Tickets are $15/person and you may bring one guest. Please register online to purchase your tickets. If you have any questions, please contact the Alumni Relations office at 607-777-2424 or [email protected]. No refunds can be granted for this event. After the movie, we encourage you to gather with other alumni at a nearby restaurant to share reactions to the movie.

If you are unable to make it to this screening, or if it is sold out, you can purchase tickets to another showing at the AMC Loews Village 7 directly from the ACM website or the theater box office. Additionally, the movie will be available on demand following the film’s release in theaters.

The Rewrite follows a down-on-his-luck, award-winning screenwriter, played by Hugh Grant, who, as a last resort, takes a job teaching at Binghamton University, where he hopes to focus on writing another hit. However, he winds up becoming more involved than he ever imagined with his students, his colleagues — both friendly (J.K. Simmons, Chris Elliott) and adversarial (Allison Janney) — and a single mom going back for her degree (Marisa Tomei). The Rewrite is Lawrence’s self-professed “love letter” to Binghamton. He grew fond of the area while attending the University and wanted to mirror his own experience in the film.
